Make 2008 Count!
Can you determine the measure of your life?
One of the most brilliant minds that ever graced our planet, Albert Einstein, said, "Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." We have just counted the cost or the return from 2007, it is one of the traits of being human and having an ego ensures that we will measure our life.
More-so, what if you could determine the breadth, the length and quality of your life? Measure is certainly a process of analysis and the tape measure is so frequently used at this time of the year. One thing that I find myself doing at the end of each year is reflecting upon what I did, what I could have done better and what I will do as a result of this thinking. Reflection is an important part of our advancement, for it is those that do move forward and those that don't repeat all the same limiting patterns and I'm sure you'll agree that not all the patterns that we unconsciously play out are useful. The quality of your life is determined by the quality of your thoughts and your thoughts determine your unconscious patterns. After all, that's what thoughts are. Thoughts are a series of questions and answers that come to mind. If of course we predetermine our questions then we at some level, predetermine our life or certainly our unconscious thinking will shift as a result.
Commit to answer just one question in 2008!
Think about just one question that you could ask yourself this year and keep asking yourself this question until you discover the answer. You will soon realise that the question you ask is more important than the answer. And soon after pondering the question, you will realise that it is even more important to work out what you want.
Just the other day I set the alarm for 5:30 am to go surfing. When I arrived at the beach, the day was shaping up to be one of those beautiful summer days. The water was clear turquoise and the waves were a nice size and shape. I guess you could say that the day was shaping up nicely and it all started with a question that I asked myself the night before. The question was, "How can I make the most out of tomorrow?" I realised in asking the question, that the end of the day is often determined by the start of the day, so I decided to create a wonderful start. I couldn't control the weather, the waves but certainly I could control what I would do with what I had. I decided that night that if the surf was lousy, I would take a walk along the beach instead. The following morning I got both; a great surf and a walk along the beach, but the real value came from my thoughts as I walked along the beach.
Way off in the distance, along the beach I saw a red sign. It looked like it was about 3 kilometers down the beach, so I thought if I walk to the sign and back, I'll have exercised for 2 hours in the water and have walked around 6 kilometers. A great energised start to any day! So I started walking and decided to ask myself a question and decided that I would have the answer by the time I got to the red sign.
It's not about the red sign!
I don't know if you can recall the feeling of walking along a soft sandy shoreline in bare feet on a warm summer morning, with the waves rolling in to you feet, noticing all the unusual shells along the way and the darting shadows of fish through the waves. Lots of wonderful distractions really; a little like life wouldn't you say. So there I was, finally at the foot of the red sign - which by the way was telling me that I could now bring my dog (the one I didn't have) along this part of the beach. I realised I had been distracted by the journey and forgot all about my question. My question was, "What do I want to do more of and less of in 2008". When I got back to the car, feeling great from the sun and the exercise I got my answer.
In 2008 I chose to allow myself to be even more inspired by the Universe and connect more with the earth; beaches, water, waves and the air around me so I can connect more with those around me. In other words, to go with the flow more. And in 2008 I decided to have less stress and the way I would achieve this is by connecting more to the earth and trusting more in the Universe. In my head, I worked out a rough schedule where I would take a break with family to connect to the earth and Universe at least 8 times a year. You see, once you know what you choose from 2008, the rest is about creating a structure so you can be sure you achieve what you set out to do. It is literally going into your imagination first to search for what you want and then into your mind once you have the answer to put a practical way of achieving your desires. I have now placed the 8 dates in my diary.
Now, will you have just read this and do nothing to make 2008 any more than 2007? Or will you choose right now to determine your question? That is my question to you and your answer will likely determine your year. Make it a wonderful one either way and if I can help - why not come to our next Leadership and Life Mastery Day on February 2 - where we explore how to create, "Relationships Beyond Limits" - and by the way, its FREE!
